… as FESMAN Calls for More Investment in the Sub-sector
The Ekiti State Government has revealed plans to commission Nigeria’s largest snail farm, the Egbeja Snail Village, located in Okemesi Ekiti. The farm is an initiative of Farmkonnect Agribusiness Nigeria Limited, and Touchstone Snails Technology, Cyprus. The farm is projected to produce 2,600 metric tons of snails annually.
According to the Founder, Farmkonnect Agribusiness, Azeez Oluwole Saheed, the initiative would create about 2,000 individual jobs. Furthermore, the slims from the snails would be an export product as it is in high demand for hair, skincare and pharmaceuticals products.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Snail Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FESMAN) has called for investment in the helic culture industry in order to boost food security and grow the economy. According to the National President of the group, Mr Ebeh Ogoenyi, snail farming is a lucrative exportable business due to high demand. Ogoenyi added that this call for investment is in line with the government’s diversification policy.
